“We are people of the story.” That’s how I’ve been starting worship the last few weeks at the Leyden church. Each week we retell an ancient story from the New Testament written 2000 years ago or from the Hebrew Bible (also called the Old Testament) written as much as 5000 years ago. We then interpret the story for our time, gleaning the lessons it has for us now. That’s church in a nutshell. During the season of Advent throughout December we’ll be telling the story of the anticipation of the birth of the Messiah, the one who would redeem and save us all. Check us out on Facebook or at leydenumc.weebly.com to learn more. On Christmas Eve we will tell the precious and familiar story of Jesus birth from the shepherds to the angels to the baby in the manger and gifts from the wise ones in short readings interspersed with carols. Our service will begin at 7:00 pm and end with everyone standing in a circle, holding candles and singing Silent Night in the darkness. It is a wonderful story. Come and share it with us on December 24th at 7:00pm. Rev. Cheryl L. Meachen Pastor Cheryl preaches at the Leyden United Methodist Church which holds inspired worship at 8:45 each Sunday morning at 15 West Leyden Road across from Town Hall. Our facilities are handicap accessible and we offer Sunday School during our worship services. Come as you are, there are no fashion police. We welcome everyone to share communion on the first Sunday of each month. After worship every week you are invited to join us in our downstairs fellowship hall for delicious fresh baked goodies and friendly conversation. (as printed in the Leyden Life Newsletter available at the Town's website.) Worship on Sunday, November 15th at 8:45 am will feature scripture from Hebrews 10:11-25, read by Emily Herron-Clark, telling of Christ’s single offering and the way in which it inspires us to provoke one another to love and good deeds. Rev. Cheryl Meachen’s sermon titled “Encouragement” will explore how we encourage one another as Christians and our mission to thereby transform the world. The Children’s Message is “Caution! False Teachers Ahead” based on Mark 13:5-6 with Jesus’ admonition that we watch that no one deceives us. Marilyn Kugler leads the choir and music. Worship on Sunday, November 8th at 8:45 am will feature scripture from Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17, read by Rita Klaus, telling the story of a young widow who remarries and the blessings of that marriage for her, her widowed mother-in-law and humankind since the son that was born of that union was a predecessor in the lineage of Jesus. Rev. Cheryl Meachen’s sermon, titled, “Family Blessings.” The Children’s Message is “What’s In Your Heart?” based on Mark 12:44 with Jesus’ story of another widow who gives a small amount to the temple offering, acknowledging that while others give more, it is only a small amount of all that they have and what the widow gives is a huge percentage—all she has.
